Wayne Rooney aint goin’ nowhere!
This was the headline in many newspapers in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 on 22nd October, 2010.
Perhaps, the most famous anthem these days at Old Trafford is “Once a blue always a red”. But it wasn’t like this during a torrid October for the Red Devils.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 began 2010 as a truly world class player and before the World Cup, he was thought to be England’s mainstay for World Cup glory since 1966. But it seemed that Wayne Rooney was perhaps the English player who came off the worst from England’s forgettable
World Cup journey.
It all started in March when he suffered an ankle injury against Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final and was then rushed into the 2nd leg and was injured in the 1st half as United lost the semifinal after being in the driving
seat for most part of the 2 legs.
His form disappeared and Rooney seemed just a shadow of a player who had lit the Premier League last season. His personal life was not doing too well either as his extra-marital affair caused complete pandemonium.
When news came that Rooney wanted to leave Manchester United amid fears that the club can no longer compete for trophies anymore, Manchester City became favorites to sign the United hitman, but 2 days later, Rooney suddenly changed his mind and signed a
contract extension.
Reportedly, the new deal made Rooney England’s best-paid player but his reputation is still at the precipice. Currently, Rooney is nowhere near the player he was last season and is yet to score a goal from open play.
It’s Russia and Qatar in 2018 and 2022
The conquistador of FIFA, Sepp Blatter, has made a lot of decisions that have infuriated many but the latest decisions have been rather unfairly questioned when he announced that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Russia-c2991 and Qatar will host the FIFA World Cup in 2018 and 2022 respectively.
The decision has been made after the voting process in Zurich in early December, but rumors and accusations will carry on till 2022 or perhaps, longer than that.
Whenever there’s a victor, there will be a loser who would be sore and unhappy and that is how England, U.S.A and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Australia-c746, who had already proclaimed themselves as favorites to host the event cried when the decision surfaced, claiming they were promised
votes from executives at the voting committee but never received them. England came off the worst when it was knocked out in the first round after receiving just one vote.
England and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Bill-c7610 Clinton, Morgan Freeman for the U.S.A. But their presence was all in vain as Russia and Qatar launched successful bids.
Accusations of petro dollars were made at Sepp Blatter. People argued that Russia gained edged because of Roman Abramovic’s money. People still suggest that it’s going to be very difficult for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Qatar-c2986 to host the event as it’s a very tiny state and the high
temperature in summer will be another barrier.
What people failed to notice was that Mr. Blatter had chartered an unmapped territory that has a lot of chance and potential to embrace the game. The two events in Russia and Qatar might give FIFA headaches but when the tournaments begin, it will seem to
be a pretty sane choice.
