Six teams which could qualify for the Calder Cup in the American Hockey League: part 1
American Hockey League (AHL) season is going on and it has been the centre of limelight because of the participation of National Hockey League (NHL) as they have presently been locked out due to the conflict between NHL and NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA).
AHL teams have been boosted up after the top players’ presence and the season is moving towards a very interesting phase. Some teams are already looking to be favourites to qualify for the Calder Cup, as total of top 16 teams will make into it at the end
of the season.
Manchester Monarchs
Manchester Monarchs are the leaders of Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference of the AHL and have been doing excellently well in the league this season. Followed by St. John's IceCaps, Portland Pirates and Worcester Sharks in their division and separated
with 4th placed team by just two points, Monarchs are on top with 32 points.
Having played 21 games, Monarchs have won just nine games in this closely contest division and are the team with least point among all the division leaders.
With nine wins, eight losses, two over time losses and one loss after penalties, they have scored 55 goals and conceded 53 goals.
Syracuse Crunch
Syracuse Crunch are the leaders of East Division of the Eastern Conference and have kept a difference of 12 points with the 4th ranked team of their division, unlike Manchester Monarchs.
With 11 wins out of 20 games and just 5 losses, Crunch’s team has kept a very convincing goal difference and winning most of their games convincingly.
Syracuse have two wins in the overtime, 1 loss in the over-time and one loss in penalties. They have scored 74 goals and conceded just 55.
Rockford IceHogs
Rockford IceHogs are the leaders of Midwest Division of the Eastern Conference and leading by three points, over the second placed team in their division.
The team has been doing really well and unexpectedly topping the division in the presence of Grand Rapids Griffins, which is one of the best teams of the AHL and have few of the top players of the NHL.
Even though Griffins have got a better goal difference than the IceHogs, the Rockford team has 34 points to Griffins’ 31.
The Rockford, Illinois based team has nine wins, one over time win, two wins in penalties, nine losses, 0 overtime losses and one loss in penalties. They have scored 73 goals and have 67 scored against him for a goal difference of +6.
They surely would be looking to keep their lead intact and hope to become the champions of their division and then the qualifiers for the Calder Cup.
