Sixth form or College?

My mind had been pondering this question for a while now as i am starting year 11 in september. My mum is very reluctant for me to go to a sixth form, she strongly believes that most people that go to college mess about which i don't think is true. I don't think i will have a say about whether i am going college because my mum has already said i have to go sixth form.

What is the difference between Sixthform/College?

When should i start applying for sixthform/college?

and should i make the choice on whether i would like to go sixthform/college or should i leave it to my mother to decided?

  1. d**n!!!!!!!! me too!!

but it is up to you

but as they say "mother knows best"

  2. You grow up in college, I chose to go there, and yeah, I did just mess about for my first year, but we could tell who stayed at school and who went on to college because the maturity levels were so so different!  With college though you always get another chance, I screwed up two years and then got my triple merit this year - so it has payed off in the end!  You also meet loads of new people in college, and its just such a great atmosphere!

I'd say, do what your mum says for now, even if you only stay at school for a year, and then go on to college after.

  3. Er, I'm in scotland n in scotland there aren't 6th forms, u can leave in 4th year and go to a college, dunno how it goes in england..think it's the school who'll sort out sixth form for ya.  Don't kno how u'd apply to college tho =/

It's your choice, not your mother's, just be blunt with her. You are old enough to make decisions about your own future! =]

    Good luck x

  4. When you leave school you leave compulsory education. It is now YOUR choice where you study and if you study. I go to a Sixth Form and they are great if, like me, you find it difficult to motivate yourself. Teachers at a Sixth Form will give more support. College on the other hand promotes self study and you will recieve less support unless you specifically ask for it.

I let my parents force me into a Sixth Form and I haven't had the best time. If its your decision then you cant blame anyone but you. Go for what you want.

"A reasonable man looks at the world and asks how he can fit in with it. An unreasonable man looks at the world and asks how it can fit in with him. Therefore the world is changed by unreasonable men."

  5. College not VI form.

I went to a VI form and now teach in a college.

VI form was full of people who were too lazy to leave school so just carried on. You were treated like a child and given no oportunity to develop.

In college there is more opportunity to mess around but fewer people do. You get to take more responsibility for your learning, similar to uni but with more support.

You tend to also get a wider range of courses and better facilities.

You just study your subject, you don't need to go to assemblies and RE classes (yes I know not all VI forms do these but some do).

VI form may be stricter but it encourages you to remain a child and does not prepare you for work or uni life.

You come into college with a clean slate, teachers at college don't know if you messed about when yo were 11 or if your brother was cleverer than you.

For your mum's information I was forced to go to VI form, I didn't mess about I just sat in classes being miserable. I am still bitter about two completely wasted years of my life. And I still have the occasional nightmare that I have to go back. It is YOUR education not your mother's.
