Sixth seed Yanina Wickmayer ends Georgian qualifier Anna Tatishvili’s run at the Family Circle Cup
Yanina Wickmayer of Belarus ousted Anna Tatishvili in straight sets during their third round match at the 2011 Family Circle Cup, scoring a 6-4, 7-5 victory over her opponent in a little over an hour and forty-five minutes. It
was a handy victory for the sixth seed, who has defeated Tatishvili once before three years ago.
Wickmayer is currently ranked World Number 23, and is only 21 years old. The player resides in Monte Carlo, Monaco, and has won three WTA career titles since she turned pro in 2004. She received the Most Improved Player award in
2009, after completing a ranking-boosting season which featured a semi-final showing at the last Major, the US Open. The player also won the 2010 Auckland event, and has managed to play consistent tennis so far. This year, her best appearance was at Indian
Wells and the ASB Classic Open. She managed to reach the semi-finals at Indian Wells, and made it to the title match of the latter event. If she wins the Charleston event, she will score her first title of the year.
Meanwhile, Anna Tatishvili is 21 years old and is yet to break into the WTA Top 100. She is currently ranked World Number 115, and has not won any career titles so far. The player hails from Georgia, and managed to score some high-profile
wins this week at Charleston. Her conquests included Australian tennis player Jelena Dokic, and ninth seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia. She was definitely fit for the match, but it seems as if it was not enough to discourage the formidable Wickmayer.
Yanina Wickmayer began the match extremely well, rushing to an early victory in the first set. The player could not score any aces, but committed only two double faults while Tatishvili made five such mistakes. In addition to this,
Wickmayer managed to defend herself against two of four break points while she successfully broke Tatishvili three times. Both players competed for five service and return games apiece. Wickmayer was tested in the second round, when she committed one double
fault. The Belarusian pro negated this with three more aces, and concluded the match with ten points more than her opponent.
This victory brings Wickmayer’s head to head record against Tatishvili to 2-0, as she defeated the player in 2008 at the Indian Harbour Beach semi-finals.
Wickmayer will compete against current World Number 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Family Circle Cup tomorrow, after both players secured their position in the next rounds with straight sets defeats of their
respective opponents.
