Have you ever disappointed about the size of dishes in Thailand. In other words, the amount of food is too little compare to American/European food.

I was extremely disappointed with the small size dishes (for example 30 baht fried rice) I was still expected a big dish with 2-3 other size dishes like in an American restaurant. I am now telling people, I want a special dish add extra 5-10 baht on my dish. The food sellers look at me funny ...lol :)

  1. In my neighborhood a 30 baht dish is more than enough for one person. It all depends where you eat.

  2. Actually after the price of rice increased earlier this year instead of increasing the price of dishes lots of stalls just started given smaller portions of rice.

  3. it is because asian portion is alot smaller due to the physical size of asian and american. asian by nature eat lesser compared.

it is the same thing when asian went to USA to order food to realise that they have to pay US7-8 bucks for 1 big portion but they can not finish the food. Or it can take up to 2 person to finish 1 portion.

  4. The dishes can be on the small side in many places, but two dishes will usually stuff me at the places near my house and for 150 baht or so for a delicious meal for my family of three, I'm not complaining.

  5. i find portions to be okay in thailand, depending on the food. since rice fills me up quick i dont need alot of it.....lol....ive never seen a dish size to small there ;p

  6. The servings in many places in Thailand and Vietnam are very small in compared to what we get in America. I often see what would be a serving size for one in America be meant for 4 people in a Thai or Vietnamese restaurant.

But, then, there are street hawkers that will give you enough food for a week on just a dollar in exchange values. It depends, a lot, on where you go to eat. Lots of times, restaurants are not the way to go in Indochina for decent eating.

  7. American serving must be really big, because for me the dishes are large, but we always order a couple of different dishes and sometimes we don't finished it.

  8. I have only been to the states twice and yes the food is cheap and the portions are large.

But there is a large problems with obestisy in general compared to Asians and Thais in particulary.

  9. i never have any prob getting enough to eat...food is soo much cheaper and so much fresher!

  10. Portions in the US are a lot larger than the rest of the world, especially compared to the non-western countries. That will happen everywhere you go outside of the big American and western European countries. Even European portions are a lot smaller compared to US ones in general. Food is a lot more expensive in comparison to the income there also.

  11. Might this "larger portion size" be the reason so many Farangs are fat?

If I get fried rice in the US it will cost at least 4 or 5 times what I pay for a dish in Thailand - maybe I have been eating too much when I am in my country.    Not enough food then order another plate the price is cheap!

I do like "all you can eat" buffets - find a breakfast buffet for under 130 baht in Bangkok and you will make out pretty good!  (Breakfast buffets in Thailand almost always have other choices like soup, fried rice, pastry, sliced meats, breads, fruit, vegetables, spaghetti and sauce, cereals and various breakfast type foods plus all the coffee, tea, milk or juice you want.)

  12. Aha... First thing you find in Thailand is that things are more expensive than when you left years ago....

Again, Thai people do eat song chan (two dishes) mostly so you can also get to eat two diffrernt things at one meal. Try fried rice with Tom Yum or Kaw Law... They're good.

The only two things I missed while the US were Nam Pla and meat ball Luk Chin Nuer.

Go to food court on the 7th floor at Central world. They a little pricy comparing to street food, but you'll get plenty of variety of things. These are new.
