Question:

Skating attire for testing?

I am taking my Pre- Preliminary Freestyle tomorrow, and I am totally ready for it. I switched coaches a few months ago, and the coach I had before (With whom i took the Pre-Pre Moves) NEVER told me about Skating attire etiquette.

my coach now says its "very important". I am wearing a black, longsleeve turtle neck under a white zip up sweater with black gloves, black mesh skirt and neutral tights.

Is this ok to wear? Does the length of the skirt, shirt, type of tights, etc. affect if you pass your test? Why is the attire so important?

  1. I think that'll be fine. They won't take any points off and won't disqualify you...it's just a polite, common thing to do. They won't measure your length or anything - no worries. And good luck on your test!

  2. While appearance is very important (your coach is right), your attire seems fine. GOOD LUCK! KICK ICE!

  3. i doesn't matter what you wear.. but if you are testing a dance or skills you are aloud to wear a skirt longer than your knees.. but if its freeskate (which i think thats what you are talking about) you should wear what you would wear to a competition.. so it should match your music. make sure your sweater doesn't have a hood.. thats one thing i have always been told. " No hoods , it makes you look bulky"

    hope this helps!

    GOOD LUCK!! : )

  4. That sounds okay.  Testing is kind of formal, versus competition where there is room for the flash and glitter.  Black and white is usually the best way to go.  Remember just plain and classy when it comes to testing.  The judges are looking at your skating, not what you're wearing.  I have been to some very formal tests and some very informal tests; back in the day, we all had "club dresses" with matching lycra pants that were very uniform that we wore to tests.  Then during the last test I took, I was told I could keep my warmup sweater on and even my gloves if I wanted.  You'll get a good taste for it when you get there and watch the other skaters.  I don't think what you're wearing should cause you any problems.  I believe the whole "dress code" is out of respect for the judges.  Just like in competition, if the skater looks put together, it probably reflects their skating.  Judges want to be able to see straight knees, which edge you're on, all that technical stuff that if you're wearing baggy sweats or what we all usually wear for practice would make it harder for them.

Most importantly, good luck with your test! :)

  5. yeah they dont' care that much. well at least not to that point. if you just wear suntan tights, a dress of somesort, and your hair slicked back they won't really care. it doesn't effect if you pass it at all. the attire isn't that important......
