  1. I guess the rule of thumb I have heard most recently is you should get them sharpened about every 20 hours you spend on the ice.  Some skaters like sharp blades, some don't, so it's also a matter of personal preference.  If you're having trouble centering spins, holding edges and if you scrape your fingernail across your edges and nothing comes off, it's time to get them sharpened.

  2. If you're starting to slip off your edges, then it's time to get them sharpened.

My test is to rub the outside of my thumbnail on the edge of the blade. If the blade can shave a little off, it's still got some edge.  If it can't shave anymore it's definitely too dull.

It really helps to keep track of how many hours you've skated, then once you've done it a few times you will have a rough idea of how often you want them sharpened (every 20 hours, 30 hours, etc.).

  3. Usually a skater will sharpen their blades about every 20 hours of skating. Most skaters figure out how sharp they like their blades and then adjust their sharpening schedule to how they like their blades, but this can take some time to figure out how you like your blades. You will start to "slip" on the ice when your blades aren't sharp enough.

  4. well u don't say like once every three months u just sharpen them when they feel dull. When u notice that u r sliding around or well it's just kind of something u will notice. If u r not professional then when u think they r dull ask a coach or someone to feel the blade and they will tell u wether or not to be sharpened.
