Question:

Skating-related injuries?

Have you experienced any skating-related injuries? How did it happen? I was practicing a loop off ice, and ended up with a fractured ankle. I quit skating a long time ago, but I want to start again. How can I prevent injuries this time? I've heard stories of concussions, etc., and I was always slipping on the ice, so I've gotten to be a bit paranoid.

  1. I sprained my ankle yesterday

I landed my axel in a hole that the stupid hockey players leave

I fell on my ankle and now, I can walk. I practice off-ice everyday, so I try to make it stronger, it's not really working. I need to make it stronger so I can skate better. It still hurts soooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. omg i hurt myself skating all the time ♥ but anyways i have a really bad ankle from a fructure and i have a severe bone spur or whatever lol, but i always wear a sock on that ankle and tight that skate really tight so it gives the ankle more support but you cant reallly worry about preventing getting hurt bc u can get hurt doing anything, you just have to take a chance and believe that u arent going to hurt urself. just be careful but dont try to hard not to get hurt or you wont learn anything new. =) good luck

  3. My worst would have to be a cracked knee cap.  My coach wanted me to do a transition from back spiral to a forward spiral with a 3 turn and no step down.  When I practiced it, I was going real slow, and when I did the 3 turn to go forward, I tripped on my toe pick and went straight down on my knee.  I could barely put any weight on it to get off the ice - I knew something was wrong (I've fallen on my knees a zillion times and never felt "this").  Sure enough within a couple hours it swelled up like a baseball - and by morning the doctor xrayed it to confirm I had a cracked knee-cap.  I had a removable splint and was off the ice for about 3 months.

My worst muscle one was a torn quad, but that was my fault.  I have a high tolerance for pain, and I kept on jumping through an already muscle pull that I had.  I should have taken some time off.  Instead, I actually tore the top of my quad muscle on my landing leg.  So now I have to keep it "stretched" or else that torn quad twinge comes back.

Do learn how to do off ice exercises properly.  Off ice exercises are different from being on the ice . . . you can easily tweek your knees or ankles especially when landing them off ice.

Work up a stretching routine to keep your muscles limber.  Warm up off the ice each and every time before you get on the ice (and afterwards!).  Eat a healthy diet that promotes stronger bones and muscles.  Be sure and get enough rest . . . being tired on the ice can cause silly slips - and injuries.  With skating, falling is just inevitable . . . make sure you learn to fall in the most safest way possible.  Injuries just happen too . . . learn what to do when it happens (like R.I.C.E. - rest, ice, compression, elevation) to get you on the road to healing faster and do take care of it.

Do get over the fear of falling.  It can block you from skating full force.  Sometimes trying too hard to prevent injuries can actually cause injury because your body/muscles get too tense.  Relax when you skate . . . face those fears when you attack your skating - it means you're challenging yourself!

In most cases, you fall and then you get right back up again . . . you just keep on going!!  Best of luck!!!!

  4. I've had many injuries, not all are related to skating, in fact my worst injury was related to running in gym class at school. I've broken and bruised my tailbone a few times, hit my head a few times (nothing too serious though). Just falling on my butt a lot (without crash pants) caused my tailbone problems, and as far as hitting my head, it was when I was just beginning, and I was doing backward crossovers and I suddenly just fell backwards and hit my head. The only other time I hit my head was when I got my blade tangled with another skaters blade while spinning. My most serious injury was an injury that occured while running in gym, I twisted my knee which it later required surgery, and it turned out that my body reacted badly to the surgery and now I have a rare neurological condition which prevents me from skating (and has for the past 2 years), but I'm hoping to put my condition into remission and skate again. Don't be too worried about injuring yourself while skating, injuries do happen, but it's something that you can't be too overparanoid about. Good luck!

  5. I am a competitive figure skater and i have had many injures - i broke my wrist , have pulled the tendons in both my legs , hit my head of the ice a good few times and i have a really bad back from doing spins and spirals.

But if you don't want to fall i would suggest that you don't do skating because you always going to fall at skating when you try new things !

I am on Triple jumps and if you fell doing a single loop off the ice and ended up with a fractured ankle what is the chance you will be able to do it on the ice !

    (no offense)

    =]

  6. dont be scared the ice is life... ive been playing ice hockey for 11 years now and after many injuries i realized a broken bone will heal... but pride lasts forever.. i know its cheesy but hey whatever works works... get on the ice it will be worth it in the end

  7. i sprained my ankle a year and half ago. i don't remember what i was doing. i brused my knee doing a double flip. lol

  8. just be more careful i fell on ice and hurt my knee and is still swolen from a month ago but the next day after the injurie i had to skate and i could barly stand but dont be afraid be careful but dont give up ok ! so good luck
