Question:

Skeptics, can you show me a comparison (in Mt CO2e) of a volcanic eruption and anthropogenic emissions?

Compare both CO2 quantities released.

Here is a help for you: Greenhouse gases emissions are currently at about 30 Gt CO2e/year = 30,000 Mt CO2e/year.

  1. I am always open to new information - is that true for believers in climate change??

Does science know what is under the oceans?

Are you even willing to look at new information?

  2. more blog source statistics - they'll never find a legitamate source showing any eruption has ever emitted more co2 than annual emissions from human acivity.

Mt St helens 1980 eruption released less than 3Gt CO2

  3. I can, but I'm not a skeptic :-(

Just to clarify, Mt = megaton (million tons) and Gt = gigaton (billion tons).

CO2e/year = carbon dioxide emitted per year.

To be fair, most skeptics realize that human CO2 emissions dwarf those of volcanoes.

Yeah every so often the volcano argument pops up, but it's fairly rare by now.

"Present-day carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from subaerial and submarine volcanoes are uncertain at the present time. Gerlach (1991) estimated a total global release of 3-4 x 10E12 mol/yr from volcanoes. This is a conservative estimate. Man-made (anthropogenic) CO2 emissions overwhelm this estimate by at least 150 times."

  4. I could too, but I'm not a skeptic.

Dana - most real skeptics know that, but I keep reading "skeptics" making the same bogus volcano claim over and over again.

OK, I want the 10-points so I'll go ahead and post a comparison:

"Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes--the equivalent of more than 8,000 additional volcanoes like Kilauea (Kilauea emits about 3.3 million tonnes/year)! (Gerlach et. al., 2002)"
