Question:

Ski Boots: Flex Index?

I rented ski boots the past year. This year I want to own my own. I am a intermediate/ Advanced skier. What does flex index mean? What would I want if I was an intermediate/ Advanced skier? I don't feel like driving 20 miles to a ski shop and ask with gas as high as it is.

  1. The flex index is the relative amount of force the boot needs to flex. The higher the index, the stiffer the boot.  It also will vary with your size for what is correct for you.  My boots  (Salomon)  had an index of 110, I had them softened by a boot fitter, I am 220 and 6', the 110 is too stiff for my comfort.  I no longer race so I do not need or want a 110 or stiffer flex. Depending on your size, the flex should be above 80 if you are an average size person. A light weight woman may need a 60-70 flex.  Before you purchase any ski boot, wear them in the shop for at least 4 hours.  Have the boot fit, foot shape, cant, and ramp angles explained to you. You will also want a set of custom foot beds.

To fit the boot, you need a boot technician to help.
