Is one used for special conditions or put on the skis first? What are some good resources for me to learn to maintain my own skis?

  1. Fluorinated wax is a special racing wax, expensive but very good.  Hydrocarbon based wax such as paraffin is the cheapest it does not last long but is good enough for recreational use for most skiers.  You could do a web search on ski tuning to find many sites that will help you understand how to do it yourself.

  2. A great website for purchasing quality ski tuning suppliers is Reliable Racing.
