Skier and filmmaker Nick Waggoner in contention for National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Award 2012
Renowned skier and film-maker Nick Waggoner has been added to the list of nominations for the 2012 Adventurer of the Year Award that is presented by National Geographic to acknowledge an adventure for their achievements in the previous year and honour them.
The selection process for the Award will be done through an online poll on National Geographic’s website, where the visitors can view interviews and photos of nominees to gain more awareness of the accomplishments of the adventurer in 2011 and make their
decision based on that.
Waggoner has found his name in the list after embodying the spirit of adventure and dedicating most of his time to outdoor action, capturing some of the most thrilling action in camera and presenting it as beautiful art. He recently showed off his magic
in ‘Solitaire’, a back-country ski and snowboard movie shot in South America with the help of his film unit, Sweetgrass Productions.
In contrast to other film-makers, Waggoner did not carry out his shooting from a helicopter. Instead, he took a more adventurous approach and filmed his athletes by skiing alongside them, using paragliding or simply conducting the shooting on foot.
The outstanding display of courage and adventurous spirit during the shooting of ‘Solitaire’ got him recognition from National Geographic and convinced them to add him to the list of people who deserve to be given an Award for their achievement to come up
a film that is as close to the real action as it can get.
Talking to a reporter from a leading sports network, Waggoner said "It feels pretty amazing to get that kind of recognition from such a well-revered publication like National Geographic. It's really a huge honour for myself and all the guys at Sweetgrass:
Ben Sturgulewski, Michael Brown, and Zac Ramras. We've all poured so much energy into 'Solitaire' and into all the adventures behind it, but we never really imagined this kind of award. It's kind of a 'whoa' moment."
The visitors of National Geographic site, along with the fans of Waggoner and his spectacular film “Solitaire’ can vote for him every day through January 18, 2012.
