Question:

Skiing honeymoon help?

My Fiance and I are getting married in December 2010 and think a skiing honeymoon would be perfect. Obviously it's a little early to book right now but we're just setting our budget. We would like to know roughly how much it would cost for a week, as we would like to go somewhere secluded in country for our first christmas as man and wife.

Thanks so much for your help. :)

  1. "secluded in country" what do you mean? Like a chalet sort of hidden away in the mountain or what? Also you need to give us an idea or where you want to go, are you in the US or are you wanting to go somewhere in europe? I've run a couple of chalets before and at Christmas time you will be looking at between £700 - 1500 per person depending on what standard of accommodation your looking at. That price generally includes flights, transfers to and from the airport to your chalet and breakfast, afternoon tea and a 3-4 course meal 6 days a week.

You could also look at staying in a hotel, this will be cheaper than a chalet holiday, however I do recommend chalet holidays as everything is done for you, although if you want somewhere completely to yourself you may want to look into just renting an appartment for the holiday, which I'm not so sure how much these generally cost, but keep in mind the cost of ski/board hire if you dont own your own equipment, flights, your own transfers unless your taking a car, eating out etc. Its definitely an expensive holiday, but one you will love!

  2. I am going to answer this assuming you want to go downhill skiing.  If I was to do this, I would start by picking my destination...Breckinridge, CO.  It is a great town, with plenty of nightlife, it has a great resort in the town and at least 4 others within 35 minutes.  In Breckenridge you will be able to indulge in the spa treatment, shop, eat, or any other winter activity you can think of.  It is also high up, so there will be plenty of snow by December.  If you check out the website www.vrbo.com you will find people who rent their homes or condos out on a nightly or weekly basis.  You can even find a place right on the slopes that you can ski in and out of!  Otherwise, there is a shuttle that comes around in the area and will take you almost anywhere you want to go.  Alright now for the budget part.  You could probably find a nice 2-3 bedroom home that is ski in/ski out for $500/night (you could find cheaper, but you will be further away from the resort, I got a 3 bedroom condo on the east side of town for $150/night), lift tickets for 2 are roughly $160/day, and food for two for a day will be $100 (you could eat cheaper, but i dont think you will eat at subway on your honeymoon).  If you need to rent your skis you will need to add another $35/day.  I am guessing the car rental for the week would be $300 or so.  For 7 nights lodging and 5 days skiing, on the high end you are looking at around $5500 us dollars.  However, if you sacrificed a few things, you could do it for as little as $3000 us dollars.  Obviously, this doesnt include your airfare....have fun!

  3. from between £800 - £2000

    u gotta think about =

    rentals,

    ski passes,

    accomodation,

    food,

    insurance,

    clothing.....

have a gr8 time, i wish you all the best of luck

    :D

  4. Weather will be a big factor then. Pre Christmas skiing is always a big IF snow is usually a couple of weeks later.  Best wishes to you and yours.

  5. Pre Xmas skiing is usually reasonably priced in comparison to peak season skiing (in terms of flights and accommodation in Europe at any rate).

The lift pass and ski equipment will be the same price though, even though the quality of the snow and the weather will be not as good.

If you have never been skiing before, then a week skiing in December sounds a little bit crazy. (perhaps not as beginners tend to only need small areas of snow cannon produced snow) There will be a lot of accommodation available, however a honeymoon suite in a hotel in a ski resort is unlikely to be cheap at any time of the year.  A double room in a plush resort hotel might actually be reasonably priced at that time of year.

The winter olympics are in Whistler Canada in February 2010.  Obviously depending on where you are in the world, this may or may not be a good place to go.  For example, if you live in Vancouver, it is only an hour or so by car.  Whereas if you live in the UK, it costs a fortune to fly, and then drive there.

So, from England, your optimal location would probably be somewhere like Val d'Isere or Zermatt, in a plush hotel right next to the beginners slopes.  Saas Fe might be better suited to you, depending on your personalities.  Solden is really not one I would send people who have never been skiing before on a honeymoon.

There are some really nice hotels right on the beginners slopes in Val d'Isere.  I suggest you try and get an indicative price for December 2008, and then if that budget is too pricey, work your way down from that.

  6. Some of my Ski "Honeymoon" recommendations in the US...

Crested Butte, Colorado - If you want a quaint ski town

Telluride, Colorado - Still secluded, just more $$

Big Sky, Montana - Little bit of everything

Park City, Utah - More hustle and bustle, more $$, easy access

North Lake Tahoe, California - Many Ski areas to choose from, easy to fly in and out of (Reno)

No hard costs for you.  Buy your ski tickets as far in advance as you can, this can save you anywhere from 50 to 100 a person. Most resorts will let you buy online 3 to 6 months out. Sometimes doing the extra leg work to find your own accommodations (on something like VRBO) and purchasing your own tickets can save quite a bit of money.

Check resorts with airports close - Example, Crested Butte has shuttles from Gunnison, the flight might cost more, but not having a car could be a cost savings, plus many of these towns don't need cars anyways.

    Enjoy!

  7. This may be out of your budget but go to Whistler, Canada. I dont know how many times it won best resort in the world but its a few. Plus, the 2010 olympics are going to be hosted then. I know its another month over but come'on its whistler!

  8. secluded in the country means no down hill skiing and cross country is nooooo fun.

  9. Austria has some excellent snow. don't know how much it would cost though.

  10. it depends where you go we ski in austria soll and it costs around £1300  for the two of us that's with your ski lessons  ski pass and a place to stay for the week plus flights but other places can be more expensive
