As a complete beginner, I'm thinking of going skiing at the end of March/beginning of April. Is this too late for decent snow? I was thinking of going to Andorra...

  1. I have sliied in Utah. Colorado and Vermont that time of year and they are quite good.

  2. It's not the best snow, but you don't have to worry about that right now.  You are going to be on the easiest slopes and basically just getting your balance.  Anytime is a good time to start skiing!  But you will probably have more fun if you takes some lessons your first couple of times, share the experience with some other newbies.

  3. im off to Bulgeria in 2 weeks 1st time ive ever been... looking forward to it!  cost just over £400 for Flights,Hotel,Airport transfer,Lessons,Ski hire equipment hire,Lift pass and two meals a day as well as the hotel room......... So CHEAP AND aparently GREAT SNOW.

Just to let you know im staying in Borovets in the Samakov Hotel. might be worth having a look!

  4. where i live, snow is great til the end of april, but i would recommend taking a lesson first so you can start off with a good experience.  you should go to park city utah, i live there and the snow is incredible.

  5. Late season skiing is often overlooked by most Americans--however, March is one of the best times of the year to go.  Many resorts offer steep mark downs off of regular season lift passes, ski rentals, lodging...you name it, it's marked down towards spring time.

Spring skiing alows the optimal balance of snow conditons and weather--somewhat sloppy snow that firms up overnight and beautiful days with comfortable temperatures.  Softer snow is also much easier to learn in.  Also, most areas where ski resorts are located, it's not unheard of to suddenly experience a sudden cold snap in the middle of spring--a couple of years ago, my ski town recieved about a foot of snow over spring break.  I have skied big western resorts like Whistler Blackcomb, BC and Mammoth, CA at the end of June to the beginning of July.

I reccomend taking care of absolutely everything possible in advance.  Schedule lessons early and show up at the resort before the lifts open so that when they do, you can enjoy the first fabulous runs in prime snow conditions.  That way you can also clock out at around two in the afternoon, avoiding the period before close when the snow is mushiest and still getting a good days skiing in.

As you improve, invest in a few trips during high season.  But when you are a beginner, it doesn't matter whether you learn on a perfect powder day mid January or a slightly slushy day over spring break.  Good luck and have fun.

  6. try end of feb for good snow
