Skimboarding help?

I live in a small town in Ohio but every year I go to Kitty Hawk, NC. I can make it out to where the wave is starting to break but I don't know how to ride it. I just go over it or it breaks on me. Also, is it good that I can make it to the wave for only skimboarding 5 weeks out of my whole life? or do I suck?

  1. Before you get really good at wave riding, you should really master sand skimming. Depending on what type of board you have, it might not even be bouyant enough for serious wave riding.

Find a flat part of the sand where there is a thin layer of water when a wave rolls up. Make sure the water is shallow enough so  you don't just sink when you jump on the board. Throw the board out in front of you and, with a running start, jump on with both feet. Try to keep your weight over your front foot; if the weight is unbalanced, the board will fly out from under you. Just keep practicing this and you'll get it.

Go to youtube.com and watch skimboarding videos. Seeing someone else do it helps a lot.
