Question:

Skin Rash from Sunblock or salt water?

My daughter has gotten a skin rash and it is not going away. I suspect it is the sunblock that I put on her only because it has appeared only in those spots where I applied sunblock. We just recently got a pool and we opted for the salt chlorinater instead of chlorine. I at first thought it was the salt water but now I have noticed that the rash is not under her swimming suit. Anybody else have an idea or ever had this rash?

  1. yes I have had the same reaction to sun block. There are some nasty chemicals in some sun blocks. I did get a medicine from the doctor that made it go away in about a week. It was called Fluocinonide. I think that is the spelling, not 100% sure on that.  It is steroid based, but it had no side effects for me at all. It works for a lot of rashes, so even if it is the salt it will work. I would bet it is the sun block though. You then have to find a sun block that does not react that can be tough. It is too hard to narrow down to one ingriedient. I had too just stop using sun block at all, and limit my sun exposure, during the worst part of the day.

  2. I don't think sunscreens contain PABA anymore, but I am highly allergic to that - causes a bad skin rash.  She could be sensitive to one of the ingredients in the sunblock.  I'd suspect that before I'd suspect the salt water.  You could ask the doctor, but [s]he would not be able to tell what ingredient in the sunblock she's sensitive to.

  3. Maybe she is allergic to the salt in the pool?
