Skipper Darren Sammy vows to bring passion and pride back to West Indies Cricket
Newly-appointed captain of West Indies, Darren Sammy has vowed to lead the side from the front in a bid to reinstate pride and passion in West Indies
cricket. The twenty-seven-year-old, who has replaced flamboyant Chris Gayle, was talking to a news conference at the beginning of a six-week long tour of Sri Lanka.
"My role as captain firstly will be to lead from the front. I intend to bring energy, passion and performance to this http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 set-up," said Sammy.
"We want to bring the passion and pride back to West Indies fans because for us in the Caribbean, cricket is more than just a game,” added the enthusiastic skipper, who might lack experience but possesses zeal and zest to make up for it.
The 27-year-old all-rounder opined that the players are steadfast in their dedication to take West Indies cricket back up the ladder. The glorious days
of the 70s and 80s have become a distant memory for Caribbean cricket, when the side had won 11 Test matches in a row besides lifting two successive World Cup trophies. The victors of 11 consecutive One-Dayers are currently struggling at No. 7 in the ICC Test
Rankings.
Darren Sammy, who has an experience of just eight Test matches in his account, was surprised last month when the West Indies Cricket Board handed him
the responsibility to lead the side during the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 tour, axing Chris Gayle from his role as an outcome of him turning down the WICB central contract. But the all-rounder has said that being appointed as the West Indies captain is more of an honour than
a surprise for him, as it is a post he has been dreaming for all his life.
Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard turned down the WICB central contracts offered to them as the contract was binding them to remain available
for national duties, sidelining their commitments with various franchises and domestic teams for T20 tournaments.
Sammy further added that leading a side is a huge challenge but he is all set to face it: “...I will try to lead the West Indies team with pride and
dignity."
The side visiting Sri Lanka lacks the experience of Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jerome http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Denesh-Ramdin-c53549 but Sammy is hopeful his men will perform well
despite the absence of the three key players.
West Indies are scheduled to play Sri Lanka in three-match Test series before taking on the hosts in five One-Day Internationals and a T20I. The tourists
are scheduled to play a three-day warm-up game against Sri Lanka Board President's XI at SSC before reaching Galle for the 1st Test which begins on the 15th of November.
