Skipping gears to save gas

i have a 2003 civic. sometimes i skip gears to save gas. for example i go from 3rd to 5th or 2nd to 4th. is this bad for my car?

  1. It puts a little more wear on the syncros on the gear(s) that your skipping TO. No major ill effects.

    But your not saving gas. Your either revving the motor higher and lugging when you skip to the next gear, placing the motor out of its optimim power band. Use every gear for a less amount of time and you will increase your fuel economy.
