How do I wax my skis with candle wax? Do you rub it on solid or melted? I know I should buy some real ski wax, BUT.... I have friends who have done it with a candle, so how do you do it?

  1. you should NOT use any wax besides wax specifically for skis or snowboards.  The equipment is too expensive to s***w up with a candle.  Plus a regular candle could contain dye that could stain the bottom of your skis.  I suggest buying "s*x wax" you can buy this at any ski shop.

  2. I use canning wax that is just about the same as the candle wax, just cheaper. I melt it on with an electric iron, then iron it into the base.  As expensive as the equipment is to buy new, the used market is very poor. Using candle wax or canning wax is just fine for recreational skiing.  Special ski wax is needed only if you are racing.

You can rub it on the bases cold, but it won't last near as long as a hot wax.  It does take several hot wax jobs to get the base saturated.  Once that happens you can cut the hot wax jobs to one every 4-6 days.  With a fresh or "dry" pair of skiis, I hot wax every2-3 days of use. I teach 5 days a week so mine must be tuned at the top of there performance.  Do a web search on ski tuning. You'll get some good descriptions of what and how to do it.  Remember that most of these shops want to sell you very expensive wax, so they can make more money.

  3. I wax my skis every season & wouldn't recommend using candle wax. Ski wax is great but expensive. I use paste wax on my skis & it's the best. Any car wax which is a paste is the best & it's far cheaper that the ski wax you buy at the ski shop shops.
