Skis to snowboard?

I'm a well established skiier, terrain park, back country, moguls, whatever. I'm going to try boarding for the second time when I go up next time the first time was years ago, and I wasn't very good at skiing then.

Is my skiing ability going to help me at all, or am I going to have to spend a few days on my *** just like everyone else?

  1. just be prepared to land on ur ***. your going to feel like you got a massive constipation. It may feel like horse back riding on your first time (the pain).

  2. I ski, monoski, and snowboard. Skiing and snowboarding use different set of muscles and different techniques altogether. The only thing you can reuse from skiing is your good sense of balance.

Everyone is different as people's motoric coordination agility on those different muscles differ. Some will be more natural in skiing, some snowboarding. To me, snowboarding was easier to learn. I did not fall much. But it could also be because I also surf and used to skateboard thru college. I feel that surfing and skateboarding did help snowboarding.

Now, take my word for it. Use wrist guards.

  3. enjoy sitting on the snow a lot.  Skiing was WAY easier to learn, just tougher to master.  When I switched to 'boarding the learning process came with many bruised back and butt and wrists.  Stick with it, once you get it, you'll love it.

  4. I grew up skiing until I was 18 or so and was very accustom to it. I switched to boarding 4 years ago. It took about a whole season to comfortably make it down the mountain. If your like most, you'll be a quite sore with a few stories to tell :o)

  5. You'll probably fall quite a bit, so you should at least be prepared for that. Skiing doesn't translate directly into snowboarding because it is a different motion and you use your body completely differently. You do have a one up on understanding how to use an edge to stop and be used to travelling down a hill on snow.

I skied for years before taking up snowboarding, but I also used to skateboard and have good balance, so I picked it up right away. You may get it quick, but it's not a given.

  6. I see skiing is to snowboarding as rollarblading is to skateboarding.... totally different... the only similarity is the fact that snow is involved.

  7. I dont really think skiing will help you snowboard at all. i think if you can balance pretty good on a beam and you skate board then you will pick it up quickly. its hard for me to tell u if it is hard to learn because i picked it up right away. But i think once you get the hang of it you will love it. YOu will probably be frustrated and just tell yourself forget it im sticking to skiing becuase thats the easy way out and you already know how to ski. But snowboarding should be just as fun as skiiing. So give it a chance. If you can balance well you should do just fine. Remember to keep most of you weight on your front foot. DO NOT put your weight on the back of your board or back foot. You wont be able to turn if you do this.
