Question:

Sks question?

my yugo sks won't shoot remington soft points. There is a dent on the primeer but doesn't go bang. It seems to push them into the chamber as if my extracor on the bolt does'nt grab them. It also pushes the shoulder back a little bit but I can still pull the cartridge out with my fingers. Headspacing is OK and my chinese sks shoots them fine(same box of ammo). It shoots cheap stuff fine(wolf etc.) The expended steel case (of the cheap stuff) measures fine and doesn't seem to have the shoulder pushed back. Any help would be apprieciated.

  1. go see a gunsmith. if one round fires and one doesn't he could tell you if it were your gun at fault.

my guess is firing pin assembly.

  2. Comparing the two, you may find that the R-P case has a thinner case rim than the 'cheap' stuff, most of which also has the lacquer coating that the U.S. ammo doesn't. This may cause the case not to be held tightly against the bolt face, which may allow a light pin strike.

Also, most U.S. 7,62x39 ammo is loaded with .308 dia. bullets, instead of .311's, like the cheap' stuff, which can also allow a 'loose' fit of the Remington cartridge in the Yugo chamber, also allowing for a 'sloppy' fit and a light pin strike.

  3. I guess just use the cheap ammo in your SKS.A friend of mine has a Norinco AK and he has the same problem, and he said he asked a guy at a gun shop about this and he said this is a common problem with AK's and SKS's.

  4. if the primer is dented, but it doesn't fire, take it to a gunsmith, your firing pin isn't hitting hard enough.

Did you thuroughly clean all the cosmolite out of the gun's internals? you might have some in there clogging it up, keeping the firing pin from moving as freely as it should.

the cheaper stuff probably has softer primers

  5. It's possible that your firing pin is worn. Are other types of ammo functioning properly in the rifle?
