Question:

Skunk smell?

My dog got sprayed by a skunk last night, and managed to get into the house before we realized it. My sister and I bathed her so the smell on her is pretty much gone, but the rest of the house smells like c**p. To make matters worse, my clothes smell as well (not horribly, but there is definitely the skunk smell on many of them). By no means would I ever throw my clothing away... I have a lot of it, and it definitely cost a pretty penny, so that is not an option. Other ideas? I want to be able to go out in public again wearing my beloved clothing!

  1. Keep spraying febreeze...it will start to subside after about 2 weeks.

  2. Would somebody please bury the tomato juice myth.  Any type of washing will eliminate the some of the smell, but the best is a mix of 1/4 cup baking soda, hydrogen peroxide bottle and a couple of Tbs shampoo.

NOW your clothes.  Sorry the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda is out......well the baking soda is still in.  Try washing your clothes either with a box of baking soda added to the water OR 2 cups of vinegar...just white vinegar.  You'll probably have to rewash with the vinegar least people think you are a salad.

House smell goes away but you can hurry it along with Febreze or sprinkling baking soda on the carpets and vacuuming and of course airing out the house! Wash down walls and windows where dog was near least the odor molecules got stuck there too.

I hate skunk!  I could smell it on my dogs long after the spraying.........if they got wet.  Dry they didn't stink but if they got caught in the rain.........phewy......so keep your dog dry.

  3. try washing in oxi kleen

  4. Mythbusters did an episode on eliminating skunk odor. They found that hydrogen peroxide worked better than the old tomatoe juice remedy.

A biologist from the West Virginia Department of Agriculture tested the following mixture by dousing a road-kill skunk. The 'fragrant' animal became completely deodorized.

    • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide (from a pharmacy)

    • 1/4 cup baking soda

    • 1 tsp. liquid soap

Mix together and wash animal, being careful to keep mixture out of animal's eyes, nose, and mouth. Rinse with tap water.

You can probably rinse your clothes in this mixture also, but test for color fastness first.  Peroxide may cause a bleaching action.  Good luck!

  5. Mix equal parts of baking soda peroxide and Dawn dish soap. First mix the peroxide and baking soda, so it dissolves well. Then mix in the Dawn. This makes a concentratred deodorizing cleaner that works on skunk odor. Mix  some with water to mop the floors and clean the walls. Also you can use a little to wash your clothes with (don't use too much, cause you don't want too many suds.)

Or clean everything with white vinegar and water. Add 1 cup vinegar to the rinse cycle of the wash. It is a great deodorizer. the vinegar smell dissipates as it dries.

  6. i was always told to shower in tomato sauce to get the smell off your body..
