  1. Can you connect to the server? Assuming you are connecting the computer to the router with a network cable (rather than wireless), and that the computer detects a network (you should get a little animated symbol of two computers connecting in the system tray). Open internet explorer and type in

    192.169.0.1

in to the address bar. Username is 'admin', password is likely to be 'sky' unless you changed it. Click 'connection status' and see if you're connected. If not, hit 'connect', though it might take a minute or two to fire up.

Of course, if your laptop will get on to the web whilst your desktop won't, then the problem is with your desktop talking to the router. Again, it's easiest if you're connected with a network cable. You may need to manually reinstall the connection settings (though a disk defrag and clear up shouldn't have deleted this). The SSID and password are printed on the router itself.

  2. Try re-starting the the modem

  3. Wired or wireless?

    XP, Vista or other?

  4. Phone sky and ask them to send out another disk.

They might even send out an engineer to fix it.
