Sky Captain ready to make his comeback soon for trainer Mike Casse
Owner John C. Oxley sent his 2-year-old purchase, Sky Captain, to trainer Mike Casse, and with high hopes pinned on him, the juvenile colt was expected nothing less to be sensational and be right up there in the 2-year-old pecking order, but things never
go as planned, and something like that happened to Sky Captain, who for now has to take the backseat, but this setback is just delaying the inevitable.
Sky Captain wrenched his ankle, when he was preparing for the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga.
Especially, when the juvenile colt by Sky Mesa defeat maidens in his second attempt by a staggering 10 lengths to win the 6 furlong race at Churchill Downs on 1 July, 2012, and clocked the distance 1 minute and 11.39 seconds.
Sky Captain, though, missed his first attempt when he finished fourth to another maiden, Malibu High, also at Churchill Downs, but the distance back the was four and one-half furlongs on 1 June, 2012.
Mark Casse was expecting Sky Captain to be his number one juvenile colt in the barn, but that gave Uncaptured the opportunity to shine, and boy didn’t he capture his opportunity well. He has currently won six races out of seven starts, including 2 grade
2 victories and a grade 2.
However, this could be a blessing in disguise for Mark Casse, as Uncaptured has proved his ability to do extremely well, and now Sky Captain is soon to make his return, as he has been working at Ocala Training Centre for several weeks, and here at Gulfstream
Park clocked an easy but impressive five furlongs in 1 minute and 0.89 seconds under jockey John Velazquez.
“He was our number one 2-year-old, broke his maiden very impressively, but then he got hurt,” Casse said. “I worked him at Ocala a couple of times last month, and he went six furlongs in eleven and change and a mile in 1:40. I’ve never seen anything like
it. He’s been training so well he got Johnny out special to work him and me to drive all the way down from Ocala just to watch this morning. And I was extremely pleased with what I saw.”
