Sky rider Chris Froome happy at Vuelta a Espana 2011 breakthrough – Cycling Update
After a breakthrough year, in which Chris Froome grabbed the runner-up spot in the Vuelta a Espana only 13 seconds behind the eventual winner, Juan Jose Cobo Acebo, Chris is now looking forward to the 2012 Vuelta a Espana and to progressing towards the front of the peloton.
He told Sky team official website, "I've been putting in the same hours on the bike and I think my improved results are a culmination of a few other things. My awareness during races, for instance, is much better now than it ever has been before and confidence has had a lot to do with that as well”.
He started his professional career with the South African Team, Konica Minolta, and took the overall Mi-Aout Bretonne and the fifth stage of Giro delle Regione. He also took the sixth stage of the Tour of Japan.
Chris joined British cycling Sky Team in 2010 and during his first season he delivered commendable results.
He finished overall ninth in the Tour du Haut Var. He also secured the runner-up’s position in British National Time Trial Championships.
In the 2011 season, Chris continued his effort and bagged the overall third place in the Tour of Beijing and the fourteenth place in Vuelta a Castilla y Leon.
During the 17th stage of Vuelta a Espana, Froome put up a tough challenge for Cobo in the last kilometres but Cobo fought back and left him behind.
As a result, Chris stood second, 13 seconds down to Cobo. Meanwhile, he showed a brilliant performance and proved to be stronger than his teammate, Bradley Wiggins, finishing ahead of him.
Recently, Chris announced that he will continue with Team Sky in the next season, as many talented cyclists, including Geraint Thomas, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Mark Cavendish and Richie Portedish, are part of the team squad.
He added, "I think it's a little early to be thinking about goals [for next season] right now but I'd definitely like to concentrate on the grand tours next year. In a perfect world getting rides in the Tour de France and the Vuelta would be an ideal situation for me but obviously we'll have to see.”
Let see, how Chris will help his team in the next season of Vuelta a Espana.
