  1. USE YAHOO IM.

me and my fiance who is deployed make pc-to-pc calls and its completely free. and its perfectly clear. we also use yahoo to see each other on webcam.

completely. free. no numbers necessary. very user friendly.

  2. Hope this will explain what Skype is.

  3. Skype is very active in Iraq.  It is 21 cents a minute to use a skype phone and when he gets a number, make sure it is one local to you, so you can call him for free.  It will be .001 cents on his end.  It works like a regular phone, he can call you and vice versa and you can talk like he is in the United States.  I have used it lots of times and i love it.

  4. I was there about 2 years ago and I used it, somewhat successfully.  It depends on how good his internet is.  Mine was deceant at times, and crappy others.  I was able to use it for calls sometimes, but mainly used it to chat and webcam.  Hope this helps.  Hope the deployment goes good.
