Well you can register and your friends can register on skype and so your calls will be free among each other.  Otherwise if you decide to make a phone call to anywhere in the United States or Canada then there is a fee.

Honestly, there is no other website like skype.  You can talk on a microphone to your friends using yahoo messenger or hotmail but the voice quality is not as clear as skype.
