Is Billy Pilgrim a prisoner? either psysically or mental or both? how?

Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. Billy Pilgrim was a p.o.w , but he always travels in his mind to other times that he has no or little control over. I read the book for a college course and frankly I think Vonnegut was suffering from post tramatic stress for the bombing of Dresden, and other things concerning it.
