  1. He will be asked a ton of questions initally.  There is usually a room set up like a bedroom with a TV.  They want you to feel comfortable so you can have a good night's sleep.

They will put EEG leads on his head...just little wires...that can read his brain activity while sleeping.  It lets the therapists know what stage of sleep he is in.  He will also have leads on his legs and chest to monitor leg movement and heart rate and respiratory rate.  He will have a probe on one of his fingers to constantly monitor his oxygen level.  None of this is invasive and none of it hurts.

They will have him do his normal nightly routine and when he falls asleep they will closely monitor all of the things I mentioned above.   They will be able to tell if his airway is being obstructed and he stops breathing while he sleeps.

Sometimes once this is documented they put on a machine that blows air creating a pressure to help keep the airway open.  Called CPAP...continuous positive airway pressure.  They can adjust the pressures to find the optimal pressure for him.  Sometimes they have to come back for a 2nd study for the CPAP, the first is only to see if they have sleep apnea.  Although more than not, they can do it all in one night.

If he indeed needs CPAP at home, they will let his Dr. know, a home care company will then fit him with a CPAP mask...just usually covers the nose..and he can have a machine at home to help.

They are VERY helpful for sleep apnea, and people often cant believe how much better they feel.

I know this was a bit long, but there is a lot of infe :)

  2. it all depends on why his dr ordered the sleep study,if it is for sleep apnea they will be monitoring how many times in a night he stops breathing and his sleep pattern they will determine weather or not he will need a cpap machine so he will stop snoring and gasping for air in the middle of the night, basically he will be hooked up to a machine so that they can observe him.

  3. they stick alot of probe like things all over your head, wires everywhere

then they go into another room and watch him sleep and monitor him

how manytimes he quits breathing or wakes up,nothing to it just aggravating the next morning trying to get the glue out of your hair.
