Question:

Sleep on a plane?

I'm taking a train that leaves at 2 am, its a 4 hour ride to the airport, but my plane dosn't leave until 11 am. I'm flying from Oslo, Norway to Newark, New Jersey. I have a 6 hour layover in Newark, then I fly to Phoenix, Arizona. I have tried the 'stay up late, wake up early' thing when I came here, but I still couldn't sleep. I felt like my head was going to explode. I understand those jokes now, about being crammed into the seats like sardines, there's no way I can get comfortable. So how do I sleep on a plane, and if I miraculously fall asleep, how bad are my muscles going to feel?

  1. How about try to get no sleep at all, Im not sure how someone could sleep under those circumstances otherwise and theres drugs but theyre not good for you..

  2. I flew from Atlanta to Heathrow & fell asleep only to find when I awoke I had been resting on an American womans arm & had dribbled onto her sleeve, she wasn't best pleased!!

Definatly sardines, next time I fly I'm going business class & I don't care how much it costs

  3. I have flown from Paris to Bangkok and i fell asleep when they took off and woke up when we were landing. DO NOT GET A SLEEPING PILL it is very bad for you.

  4. can't really offer you much info. if ur really that concerned just try to stay awake. lol pinch urself if you start to doze off....

  5. The thing that made me feel "bad" from sleeping on a plane was the medicine I took to help me do so...I took two Benadryl and slept badly for about 3 hours. I felt like I was going to pass out once we landed in London. But on my next flight, from London to Edinburgh, I had NO medication and was out like a light for the majority of the flight (though it was short).

What I'm trying to say is that being exhausted physically and mentally enabled me to sleep without any medication, and I felt much better after that nap. Try doing some exercises before you get on the plane - walk around the terminal a lot, climb up/down stairs instead of taking escalators or elevators (when possible - with a lot of luggage, that's no easy task). Don't drink anything with caffeine - when it wears off, you'll feel like you've been hit by a bus. And on the train ride, try your best not to fall asleep - get up and walk around there, too.

Hope this helps you catch some Zzs.

  6. get one of those inflateable travel pillows, they really help

  7. It's best to sleep on any flight because it means you won't arrive tired - whatever time zones you're travelling in. I suggest an eye mask and earplugs to cut out any distractions and then a general sleeping technique of imagining a white ball of light - concentrating so hard on one thing sends me straight off. Remember to drink plenty of water too as planes can be very dehydrating.

  8. talk to your doctor and try to get an ambien sleeping pill, they work wonders. You can eventually become dependant but if you just use it occasionally you should be fine. I used it on multiple transatlantic flights.
