Sleeping on an airplane? 10 points will be rewarded to best answerer!?

Ok, so I leave tomorrow to go to Europe. The trip is about 9-10 hours long. I want to sleep about 4-5 hours of it because I don't want to have jetlag. For some reason though I can never sleep on airplanes. What can it do? Plus it is a night flight.

My friend said I should wake up at 6 am and run 5 miles so I should be tired. Should I do that?

Thanks! If you have any other tips that would be great!

  1. take a couple tylenol pms. and you should crash right out...only u could be groggy when you wake up..sometimes you are, but it depends on  your metabolism.

  2. haha.. I am flying internationally to Europe tommorrow!! =) I am going to bring my music, and I am going to foce myself to sleep... haha.. except I live on the west side of the USA so, by the time I get to the east it will be night time, and then at night I will fly over the ocean.. but I am going to force myself to sleep, I dont have a loto f problems falling asleep, but I flew overnight before and I remeber it was pretty bad, but, i will bring a pillow and it should be better =)!!! Hope you have fun!!! and since its in the night, then you should be able to go to sleep right away, just think of something exhausting.

  3. If your going to Europe and it's a 9-10 hour flight your probably leaving from the east half of the US.  Getting a lousy night sleep the night before usually helps.  As far as taking something, you need to think back on what worked for you in the past.  For some people it's over the counter, for others its prescription, for a few its Xanax or Valium.

In either case you are not going to fix the jet lag part of your vacation.  You body operates on a 25 hour clock.  It would be much happier if the day was 25 hours long.  This means that traveling west you body will adjust 1 hour each day for each time zone you travel, eg if you fly from NY to LA then in 3 days (3 time zones) you will feel normal again.  Traveling east is a problem as you body does not want to go to a shorter day so it will be a struggle until you finally crash and adjust.

  4. I don't think running five miles is a good idea- you'll be more sore than tired. This is coming from someone who learned it the hard way- you don't want to be sore on an international flight. What class are you flying? I understand economy is hard to sleep in- but if you're flying business or first, you'll likely have a flat bed, and trust me, you'll almost certainly be able to sleep. I wasn't able to sleep on planes until I flew Business and had a bed- when I did, I was knocked out. If you are flying economy, though, try to relax and if possible, carry an eye mask and your own blanket. It's easier to sleep if you do. The cabin lights will be dimmed so it may also help lull you to sleep. If all else fails, get some over the counter sleeping pills, or even Benadryl. It works like a charm ;)

    Good luck!

  5. Realistically there are only 2 options.

Speak to your doctor and ask for something to help you sleep.

If that fails I recommend half a bottle of Jack Daniels. Sure helps me  sleep.

  6. I take 2 Benadrayl with a glass of wine.  Knocks me out every time.  Take them right when you board because sometimes it takes about 30 minutes to kick in.  Benadrayl doesn't make me groggy like some of the other over the counter sleep meds.

  7. Well of one i would go to like RiteAid or CVS and get some sleeping pills that usually helps second if you can do that if you get bored out of your mind you can actually make your body fall asleep.

  8. I've only flown cross country, which is 4-5 hours.  However, especially if your flight leaves early, don't sleep the night before.  That always helps me get to sleep.  Also, bring your music player on board with some relaxing music on it, that can help. Books can help you get to sleep too.

Basically, just think of what you do to get to sleep when you have insomnia, and then do it either during or right before your flight.
