Question:

Sleeping on my stomach

I just recently found out that I'm pregnant. This will be my first. I am about 3-5 weeks along and already it's uncomfortable to sleep on my stomach. Will this hurt the baby? Also, since this is my first, my emotions are crazy. I don't really feel excited or depressed, etc, almost no emotions all (besides the hormones making me cry about things i shouldn't be crying about). Is this normal too? Thanks for your answers

  1. everything is normal. there is goign to be a time when i will not be able to sleep in ur stomach or ur back and r goign to have to sleep on ur side.

    cogratx and good luck

  2. you can probably sleep on your stomach as long as you want.. but dont worry because it definately will not work out too much longer. as that little ball gets bigger itll just be impossible, and very uncomfortable.

also as youve no doubt already heard, your hormones are having a free for all.. expect more crazy mood swings to come..depression.. crying, you name it. good luck to you

  3. You can sleep on your tummy as long as it's comfortable to you.  It won't hurt the baby.  I slept on my tummy as long as I could with both babies and the only thing I've seen is that they both sleep on their tummies.

Emotions are crazy when you're pregnant.  Whatever your emotions are doing are going to be normal to you - not every pregnant woman is the same.

    Congrats though!!!!

  4. I think as far as sleeping on your stomach, for now, you're just nervous. Sleeping on your tummy is fine until about the 5th month, when you're belly just gets too big for you to do it! When I had my son, I felt the same way, I didn't feel pregnant, and I wasn't sure what to think about it. It will start getting better soon, especially when you hear the heartbeat, when you see the baby on an ultrasound, it is so wonderful! And then, when you feel the baby kick, which really won't be until around 16-20wks, you will be amazed. Congratulations, babies are truly a miracle!

  5. Emotional states fluctuate wildly throughout the pregnancy-totally normal.  If you're feeling pretty depressed, though, or nothing at all for longer periods of time--maybe a few weeks-you should seek out therapy.  Pregnancy is a major, life changing event and it's normal to need some help dealing with it.

Sleeping on your stomach is totally safe for the baby.  Until you're about 12-16 weeks you can also sleep on your back, but after that, you'll need to sleep on your stomach or your side because the weight of the fetus can slow the blood flow through the vena cava-the major artery that takes blood to and from the baby.

I'm 27 weeks and I mostly sleep on my stomach, but I use a snoogle pregnancy pillow to tilt my weight a bit since flat on my stomach feels uncomfortable.  It's impossible to "pop" your uterus--the discomfort is purely about you.

  6. I slept on my belly until I was about 6 months pregnant! And I even had a belly then. MY doctor said it was fine and I would know when I couldn't anymore. And sure enough I rolled over one night and got this pain and that was the last of it! So no sleeping on your belly won't hurt your baby. You will know when you can't! As for your emotions it's perfectly normal! Your hormones are changing! And I was the same way as you! Always crying and no emotions at first. But you will get excited about being pregnant when you see and hear your babies heart beat for the first time! Congrats and good luck!!!

  7. Yes, all of the above are completely normal.

For now sleeping on your stomach will not hurt the baby. It's normal for it to be uncomfortable already. But it will be impossible later to sleep on your stomach later on.

The emotional stuff is normal as well. It can be wacky throughout the entire pregnancy but should level off soon.

  8. If it's uncomfortable to sleep on your stomach then don't. I was able to sleep on my stomach until my last trimester.

With any pregnancy, first or not, your emotions will be crazy. You can thank all those hormones for that. It's normal. You need to give yourself time to adjust to this. It felt unreal to me at first but after my body adjusted a bit I was over the moon.
