Question:

Sleeping with fish tank mold?

I have a fairly large fish tank so I don't clean it as regularly as I probably should. Occasionally mold grows on the lid of the tank or the water gets murky, like all tanks get. My room is pretty small and I wonder if the mold or the water is a threat to my health; I know that water evaporates and don't know if I should be worried about sleeping in the room. I am thinking about getting rid of the tank because it's more work than I had anticipated but I just wanted to know if I was at risk of breathing in any mold.

  1. The mold grows on the lid because of excess wastes that get on it, and that mixed with moisture will make the waste rot therefore allowing the mold to grow. If you want you can use a mask, like a dust mask, and clean the lid of your tank very well. It is better to do that than breathe in any of the mold. I don't think it would be extremely harmful to your health, but I wouldn't want to be breathing it in all the time. Get rid of the mold on the lid of the tank, try not to spill food on lid if you do wipe it off right away. These are things you should do. Tanks don't necessarily have to be lot's of work. I have 13 tanks, and I manage to keep all of them clean, while I work and care for children on my own. Yes they can be alot of work, but they don't have to be. What fish do you keep in your tank? What filter(s) do you use? What size is the tank? If you tell me these things maybe I can help you work around a set up that WILL be low maintenance. If it is a large tank, it is much easier to maintain with just fewer species of fish, there is less amounts of waste being produced therefore you can go longer without water changes, also depending on what type of filtration you have.
