Question:

Slicing Hybrid Club.?

I hit a draw or straight with all my other clubs. Just got a Adams Idea Boxer Hybrid 4 and can not do anything but slice it. It is a Stiff Shaft. I've tried moving the ball around my stance. Any ideas? Maybe I'm swinging it to much like a 3 wood?

  1. I noticed your emphasize that the shaft in your new 4 hybrid is stiff flex.

What is the flex in your other clubs?

If you don't have the swing speed and tempo enough to warrant the use of a stiff flex, and should be using a regular flex..  playing with a stiff flex can cause fade problems.

This is due to when you are in your downswing, the shaft doesn't unload.. since you do not possess the speed and tempo..

Since the shaft isn't unloading fully.. the clubface will be slightly opened at impact; resulting in a fade.

  2. Try a little stronger grip.

  3. I'd first check and feel if your transferring your weight to your left foot (righty golfer) when coming through the ball.

If your not transferring your weight to your front foot, then your body will be behind the ball and you'll cross the ball with an "out to in" club path.

Try almost leaning forward while coming through the ball but not too exaggerated.  It'll keep your club coming straight through the ball at impact.

Now, i reguards to hybrids, in most situations, you want to swing a hybrid the same way you would a longer iron, with a more sweeping action. A hybrid clubhead is designed to skim through the grass like a fairway wood, and the extra weighting behind the face sends the ball up high like an iron does.

The most common mistake I see players make with a hybrid is using a lot of arm swing to make a very steep up-and-down move to hit the ball. When you do this, you're robbing yourself of all the game-improvement benefits designed into the club. You'll get a better result than you would with a long or on--an arm swing with your 3-iron would smother the shot right at your feet--but you'll struggle with consistency.

When you set up to a standard hybrid shot from the fairway or light rough, concentrate on making more of a turn with your chest back and through. Your arms will follow in a more sweeping motion, and the club will travel on a flatter plane. The club head will glide through the grass the way it was designed to, and you'll get that trademark hybrid ball flight: a high launch with a soft landing.

  4. Well the face is open at impact that is for sure.  Could be because it looks different than all your other clubs you are just setting up with the face open so even a perfect swing will result in a fade or slice.  Hit it like you would an iron too, not a sweep like a fairway wood but a crisp downward blow taking a divot like an iron.  You won't get the same type of divot because of the club design, but pretend you have an iron in your hand.  Also if all your other clubs have regular flex shaft, then this one won't act the same which could also lead to the slice.

  5. Try rotating your right hand (if you are right handed) a little bit over the grip,  at address.  It will look as if your thumb is pointed at 4 or 5 oclock instead of 6.  Worked for me.

I have the same ball flight and it took awhile for me to learn to hit my hybrid.  You will stragihten it out eventially.  I would tell you not to change too much because on everything else you got good flight.  Try to swing it more like a 3 iron istead of wood, insted of a sweep, hit it to pinch it so to speak.

  6. Toby,

Whatever is happening you are opening up the clubface at impact which is either forcing the ball directly to the right or you are hitting the ball close to the hosel which is creating a gear effect on the ball causing it to spin the wrong way and creating a slice. Try closing the clubface a little bit before you hit the ball at address. This might help.

    Hope this helps,

    J

  7. try dealing with it more like a 6 iron.  Thats what a few magazines have said.

  8. Like legabgl said try hitting your hybrid like an iron. The hybrid was designed to be an iron replacement, therefore it was meant to be hit like an iron.
