Slick Citi slips out of Rotar Wing's reach in Caffreys Sprint Trophy final
Slick Citi proved to be too much for Rotar Wing at the £350 Caffreys Sprint Trophy final in Nottingham on Monday night. Citi took the race by ¾ lengths with a time of 18.14, compared to Wing’s time of 18.20.
After 5-4 Citi and 8-11 race favourite, Wing, the field was barren of real challengers. The best of the rest was third place finisher Pineapple Tommy, who was an 8-1 longshot to win the race, but still held better odds than the rest of the pack. Fourth place finisher Daisyfield Soots and fifth place finisher Port West both ran at 20-1 while Salacres Meako, in last place, was 16-1.
Before the Caffreys Sprint Trophy final, there were three Caffreys National Oaks qualifiers. The £500 final is set to go 13 September.
In the first heat, Klockwork Kyla lead for the entire race finishing 3 lengths ahead of 10-11 race favourite, Beautiful City, who kept the race close until losing ground on the fourth bend. In third was Shooting Errin by a ½ length and another ½ length behind her was Kilmurvy Romance.
The second heat saw Minglers Fly get off to a good start taking the early lead, but Cover Mazz took over on the second bend and stayed ahead of Fly from there, winning the race by a shoulder. Finishing 5 1/2 lengths back, and in third place, was 6-4 race favourite, Was Not Me, who took third by only a head over Fabulous Path. Not Me had trouble on the second bend as Mazz made her move causing her to lose significant ground. Fifth place Droopys Agatha and sixth place Treacle Express also had difficulty on the second band.
The final heat finally saw a race favourite win as 8-11, Bandicoot Frisky, took first place with a convincing 3 ¾ lengths over Memories Blonde and Rock It Diva. Blonde and Diva finished in a dead heat, both earning second place finishes, but only Memories Blonde will race in next Monday’s final. Another ½ length behind Blonde and Diva was 10-1 longshot, Swift Pebble, in fourth. Droopys Noreen finished in fifth, and last, after Key Signature dropped out of the race.
