  1. Usually, something like this, if accompanied by fever, bodyache, a feeling of being generally unwell, tells of an infection.

    But not always.

Some viral infections of the respiratory tract also give this picture.

Usually, the other important thing to see is the sputum/phlegm you are producing.

Is it watery? Probably viral, or allergy.

Is it green/yellow/pus-containing? Bacterial infection of upper respiratory tract, or pneumonia.

Is it white? (Don't get scared) It usually shows tuberculosis.

    Blood-containing? Pneumonia, tuberculosis, or cancer.

Sudden onset of watery sputum, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, congestion. Its probably viral. Don't worry. Take some cough syrup (yuck!) that'll calm the angry immune system of your body. And if there is a headache, or any other pain, take paracetamol 2 twice (or three times) a day. Get some rest. Have some warm soup, coffee, tea. Take some strepsils for the sore throat.

In case of a fever, and the above remedies not working, you'll need a doctor who'll tell you which antibiotic to take. But usually, this is not necessary.

    You'll be better before long.
