  1. The Union Workhouse in Sligo was built in 1841 at the cost of £13,250. There was terrible suffering and starvation during the ensuing Famine years and it was difficult to obtain staff for the Workhouse, although the Sisters of Mercy were of great assistance. It was stated in a parochial report dated October 1847 that some 1,333 families in the area were totally destitute. In 1848 a Fever Hospital was erected at a cost of £2,800 to cater for more of the famine stricken people of Sligo. On the abolition of the Workhouse system in 1922, the building remained a Hospital and continued to serve the medical needs of the elderly and the homeless. In 1970 a new Hospital was built on the site of the old Workhouse and part of the old building was reconstructed to provide part of the Hospital accommodation.
