Sligo Rover runs to surprise finish in A7 race at Perry Barr
If there’s one thing that the Perry Barr Greyhound Stadium is known for, it’s the ability to raise the bar on a regular basis with some action-packed 480m races. The dogs are adept at
captivating their adoring public, and their strong finishes often give the audience something to cheer about.
The surprise first-place finish from Sligo Rovers (8-1) gave racing fans something to talk about. Despite crowding first, he finished well with a time of 29.84 seconds. Glenside Charley
was another surprise finisher in this race. The 11-4 long shot held and early pace from trap four, and led the run in to take second place in 29.90. She was only ¾ lengths behind the winner. Third place was claimed by Spriga Herbert (3-1), who sprinted to
a 30.10 finish that was 2 ½ lengths behind Glenside Charley.
Make Design, the 5-2 favourite, failed to crack the top three today, finishing fourth in 30.42. Despite a clear run, he lost some ground early on, which caused him to finish four lengths
behind third place. Only a ½ length separated fourth place from fifth, with Effernogue Gary (9-2) earning his position in 30.46. Hawksnest Oliver (7-1) brought up the rear with a 30.58 finish that was 1½ lengths out of fifth place.
Next on the card was an A5 race that saw Glenske Raider (7-2) race to a very close finish. He moved quickly away from the pack and ran on to lay claim on the top spot with his 29.46 finishing
time. Just a shoulder’s length behind him was Droopys Ego, the 7-4 favourite. He did the storied Droopys name of greyhound racing proud with his second-place finish, which matched the winner’s time of 29.46.
Exit Happy (5-1) exited this race in a happy state by finishing in third place. His time of 29.56 was 1¼ lengths behind Droopys Ego. Sailing to a finish in the number four spot was Rathmartin
Bay (5-1), who was forced to check at the quarter mark, and continued on to finish in 29.78. He missed third place by 2¾ lengths.
Crowding first and fourth proved to be the thorns in Gilded Rose’s (7-2) side. She finished 1¼ lengths behind fourth place in 29.88 to take fifth place. The sixth-place finisher was Milroad
Classic (7-1), who completed the race in 29.94. He was ¾ lengths behind Gilded Rose.
