  1. Nope, not with sling box.  All slingbox does it take your feeds form tv and put it over the internet.

PS, I'm also form NY, did you hear about slingbox on WFAN?

  2. I have one, and it's great.  To do what you want to do, you'd have to hook it up in California (at a friend's or relative's house).  The Slingbox would then "sling" their signal to your computer.  You can hook up your computer to your TV (using VGA and audio cables) if you want to watch the feed through your TV.

You are right that if you changed the channel on your computer, it would change their channel in California.  The best way to set it up in your case would be for the California Slingbox to be attached to a cable/satellite box that is just devoted to the Slingbox.  That way, you could watch what you wanted without inconveniencing the people in California.

When you set up the Slingbox and install the software on your computer, you get an image of the remote control that goes with the box you're controlling.  With that, you can turn on the box and change channels.  Neither the TV nor the computer in California has to be on for you to do this.

    Hope that helped.
