Question:

Slipping clutch/trasmission?

I have a manual 93' GMC pickup truck and I'm pretty sure its just the clutch slipping and I am going to take it in to get fixed. Anyone know roughly how much it would cost/ what are things they might try and get me to fix when it wont need to be?

  1. Most likely they are going to recommend a clutch kit. Basically this would be the clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing and pilot bearing. These are the essential parts needed to complete a basic clutch job.

They will most certainly recommend removing the flywheel and sending it to a local machine shop to have it resurfaced. Some shops are able to do this themselves. I would highly recommend getting it done. This beasically gives the new clutch disc a fresh surface to ride on.

I would also strongly encourage you to have the clutch fork and pivot ball replaced. Since you said this is a 1993 GMC, these have a tendency to wear out clutch forks over time. While your's may be fine right not, the transmission will have to be removed to replace it when it does fail. Since the transmission is removed to replace the clutch, now is the time to do it!

Finally, they might also suggest replacing the crankshaft rear main seal while the transmission is out. This may not be a bad idea if you have a high mileage truck. If it does fail later on, you will be paying for a clutch kit again.

I can't give you a grand total, but if you end up having all this done, you are looking at spending the better part of a grand. If you like the truck then this is money well spent. And think of it this way, it would be another 15 years before you have to have it done again.

  2. with the clutch kit you should receive a throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, pressure plate, and the clutch they may suggest you machine your flywheel which it could need, im not sure of the flat rate hours you will be charged

  3. it should be around 350 o so , since you have the reaplace the cluth most likely, depending on what brand and type of clutch you buy, plus install.

its only the clutch don let them think you dont know anything about the problem. cause then theyll try to make up other things to charge you more.

trust me that is a clutch wearing out, and if you dont fix it fast you can break the clutch and all the broken pieces go into your tranny and then break the tranny also. ( so try not to use your truck as much )

  4. it also might need a pressure plate too and if it,s been slipping for some time, the flywheel might need turning, unless it,s got heat cracks, then it needs replacing.
