Sloane Stephens defeats Gabriela Dabrowski in straight sets in qualifying final at Family Circle Cup
American tennis player Sloane Stephens cruised into the main draw of the 2011 Family Circle Cup with a quick victory over Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada, defeating her opponent 6-3, 6-1. Stephens took barely fifty-seven minutes
to oust his opponent.
The American pro is currently ranked World Number 180, and has barely broken into the Top 200 of the Women’s Tennis Association Tour. She is only 18 years old, and has not yet turned pro officially. The Florida resident plays
right-handed tennis, and has taken part in ten matches prior to this tournament. She has won four of these matches.
On the other side, Gabriela Dabrowski is ranked much lower than her American opponent at World Number 511. She is just one year older than Stephens at 19. The player has taken part in seven matches so far, losing four of
them.
Stephens was seeded thirteenth in these qualifying rounds, and managed to live up to her seeding in this match. She committed just one double fault, and successfully converted six of ten break points against Dabrowski. It
took her less than an hour to qualify for the main draw of the prestigious Charleston tournament, after she won an impressive 61 per cent of the total points in the match.
The American player will now compete against eleventh seed Shuai Peng of China in the first round of the main draw of the Family Circle Cup.
Great Britain’s latest WTA star Heather Watson also made it into the main draw of the 2011 Family Circle Cup, after scoring an impressive victory over Slovakian tennis pro Lenka Wienerova. Watson managed to win the first
set of the match 6-1, but faltered in the second set to give Wienerova an edge which enabled the Slovak to push the set into a tie-breaker. However, Watson was successful in the end and concluded the match with a 6-1, 7-6(2) scoreline.
Watson is currently on the verge of breaking into the WTA’s Top 100, and is ranked World Number 122 at the moment. This is quite impressive for a player who is only eighteen years old; in addition to this, she has won fifteen
of the twenty-three matches she has taken part in so far this year. The right-handed player resides in Guernsey, England. Meanwhile, Wienerova is 22 years old and is currently ranked World Number 219.
Watson defeated Wienerova in one hour and thirty-seven minutes, proceeding to the main draw at Charleston as a qualifier. She will be competing against American tennis pro Christina McHale in the first round of the tournament.
