Sloane Stephens dumps Camila Giorgi to reach round three - Western and Southern Open 2012
World number 49, Sloane Stephens, dumped the 20-year-old Italian, Camila Giorgi, in the second round of the Western and Southern Open at Cincinnati, Ohio. On the eve of Wednesday, the two wildcard entrants featured a one-sided
battle that was completely dominated by the 19-year-old American. She won the match in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Giorgi commenced the match with a serve hold and her opponent followed up. However, the match was turned around in quick succession with a double breakthrough for the American teenager who didn’t allow her opponent to settle at
all.
The Italian booming starlet was drowned to a trail of 1-5. However, she managed to survive a breadstick tag with a serve hold in the seventh game.
It was never good enough to appeal any sort of comeback for the youngster and she was butchered with three back-to-back winners by the American teenager who looks to be in emphatic run of form.
The second set started off with a breakthrough for the American who gobbled up the first serve hold at an expense of just one rally.She was cruising away and earned another breakpoint in the fifth game of the set that mounted a
substantial lead of 4-1 in her favour.
Stephens made sure that her opponent was given absolutely no chance at all to settle into the atmosphere as she smashed in a cracking winner to hold serve after a stern resistance from her rival.
Giorgi sprayed away two chances to hold serve and finally gifted the third breakpoint of the set that ended the encounter in the favour of her rival.
In a post-match interview, Stephens said, "I'm going to go out and play my game with a good attitude. I'll be excited. Maybe we'll get a good court. It'll be fun. I just love being out there competing, doing all the things necessary
to win a match. I'll do my best."
Sloane Stephens faces the toughest competition ahead of her as she heads on to lock horns with the top seed Pole star, Agnieszka Radwanska, in the third round of the tournament.
