Slovakia announce final Fifa World Cup squad

Liverpool defender Martin Škrtel and Manchester City’s Vladimír Weiss have both been named in Slovakia’s final 23 man squad for their first ever World Cup, a squad picked by coach Vladimír Weiss Snr.

Chelsea’s Miroslav Stoch, West Bromwich Albion’s Marek Čech and Dundee United goalkeeper Dušan Perniš have also made the cut, as have several players who had been injury doubts for the finals, including Škrtel, Beşiktaş striker Filip Hološko and Lille forward Robert Vittek.

The squad is captained by 22-year-old Napoli midfielder Marel Hamšik, and will play one more friendly at home to Costa Rica on Saturday before departing for South Africa, where they will face New Zealand, Paraguay and Italy in Group F.

Slovakia’s final squad for the Fifa World Cup:

Goalkeepers: Ján Mucha (Legia Warszawa), Dušan Kuciak (FC Vaslui), Dušan Perniš (Dundee United).

Defenders: Radoslav Zabavník (Mainz), Marek Čech (West Bromwich Albion), Martin Petráš (Cesena), Martin Škrtel (Liverpool), Ján Ďurica (Hannover 96), Peter Pekarík (Wolfsburg), Kornel Saláta (Slovan Bratislava).

Midfielders: Marek Hamšík (Napoli), Stanislav Šesták (Bochum), Marek Sapara (Ankaragücü), Ján Kozák (Timişoara), Zdeno Štrba (Skoda Xanthi), Miroslav Stoch (Chelsea), Kamil Kopúnek (Spartak Trnava), Vladimír Weiss (Manchester City), Juraj Kucka (Sparta Prague).

Forwards: Róbert Vittek (Lille), Filip Hološko (Beşiktaş), Martin Jakubko (Saturn Moscow), Erik Jendrišek (Kaiserslautern).
