Slovenia defeats Turkey by 3-2 in Pool A of 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship
Turkey and Slovenia had a match with each other on September 12th in Vienna. The contest was part of the 2011 CEV Volleyball European Championship that is currently taking place in Austria. The Slovenians walked away winners by 3-2.
The clash between the two sides took five long and thrilling sets at the end of which the Slovenians were able to celebrate their hard earned victory. The Turkish side was good on the attack but were not so strong in the defence, a fact that the Slovenians did not take long to notice and exploit. The strong point of the Slovenian play was their good strategy that kept them on track throughout and finally led to a win achieved at the following final set scores: 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 19-25 and 15-12.
The first set of the match was pretty much one sided as the Turkish team was trying to find their rhythm in the game. The Slovenians were seen with the lead while Turkey kept on trailing all through the match. After losing the first set, the Turkish were able to respond well in the second set but they still could not bag a win. The third and the fourth set were very well paid by Turkey but the final set was bagged by Slovenia.
The coach of the Slovenian team, Veselin Vukovic, shared his feelings in the press conference after the match in the following words: “Our goal was to get the second spot in Pool A and we have achieved that. We performed well in all games, except for the first set against Serbia. No matter who we play next we will have to step up again.”
On the other hand, the Turkish coach Veljko Basic shared his sentiments in this manner: “I know the Slovenian team very well; they played very well in the first two sets with their good service and without many mistakes.”
After losing the first two sets, the Turkish finally had the lead in the third one at 16-9. The Slovenians could not step up their game and overtake the Turkish as a result of which Turkey was able to bag the set at 25-16.
The fourth set started off in a close manner but eventually Turkey was leading again. Once they had the lead, Turkey did not look back until they had won the set at 25-19. However, despite a valiant effort from the Turkish side, the Slovenians did not give Turkey much room to maneuvour and won the final set at 15-12.
Despite the fact that the Turkish lost the match, their player Serhat Coskun was able to lead all scorers by tallying a total of 29 points for his team while the top scorer from the Slovenian side was Alen Sket with 25 points in all.
