Slovenia’s Vasilij Zbogar satisfied with his result in 2012 Finn European Championship
Slovenia’s Vasilij Zbogar had a superb sail on the Gulf of Follonica waters and finished on second podium spot after a decent sailing performance in the 2012 Finn European Championship. The Slovenian sailor started impressively on the Follonica waters but
a couple of low scores during his run brought him one place down to the regatta winner, Greece’s Ioannis Mitakis.
Tricky winds covered the racing area in the Gulf of Follonica from the start of the 2012 Finn European Championship but these tough conditions did not create any problems for the participants and they went through the scheduled proceedings easily. The final
day brought more trouble to the sailors regarding the weather but as the sailors were aware of the conditions, they managed well.
Zbogar was the only racer in the fleet who hit two bullets in his regatta campaign but despite his classy finishes, he was not able to hit the leading position. The reason behind his fall on the second place was a couple of lower finishes early in the regatta
and in the last two races. The medal race could not bring any help as he crossed the finish line in sixth place.
However, the Slovenian is satisfied with his results and believes he can do well in the upcoming competitions. He ended up on Number 2 podium with 43 points after seven races, including one discard race and a medal race.
While speaking to the local media about his result, Zbogar said, “I hoped for this result. We really worked hard this winter with Filippo and Giorgio, and all three of us battled for the top three places, so that means that we trained well. We didn't expect
to do as well as this as a team, but we managed to do a really good job.”
The silver medallist added, “Unfortunately Filippo is fourth but he is still young, and Giorgio too, was still battling in the last race for everything. I know Ioannis very well and I know that in light conditions he is unbeatable. I made a few mistakes
myself but I am still in the process of learning.”
His overall score line of the regatta is: 1, 11, (18), 1, 10, 14, (Medal Race 6) = 43 points
