Question:

Slow fetal growth and no heartbeat detected. . HELP!?

I had a first ultrasound due to cramping early in my pregnancy and my sac, which was visable, measured 5 weeks. I got an ultrasound 2 weeks later and there was a yolk sac and fetal pole that had developed but it the baby measured 6 weeks 5 days instead of 7 weeks. I'm 5 days behind in growth? And they tried looking for a heart beat but couldn't find one. . Is that bad or good?

I have my next ultrasound today. I'm scared. I should be about 8 weeks. I want to hear experiences that are good? But anything would be appreciated. Thanks.

  1. From your information, it looks like you only lost two days, rather than five, so the growth wouldn't be too much of an issue.  One time, my baby's "size" measurement changed by six days in three weeks.  It could be a combination of a lower/higher than average growth rate and differences in the technician's measurements.  As far as not finding a heartbeat, my doctor wouldn't even try until nine weeks, because she wasn't sure she'd be able to get it, so I wouldn't worry unless this new appointment reveals any issues.

  2. It may be that you are just off a couple days or you could be like me--they thought I was "less pregnant" than I thought I was and thought the heartbeat was too slow for the weeks I thought I was.  Turns out, the baby was still developing and by 12 weeks, it was all right on track with a super strong heartbeat.  I'm now 17 weeks, all is going fine and we may know this week what we're having.

My doctors were just so skeptical because I had just had a miscarriage in Feb., and I have some high risk complications.  My little one is a fighter!

PS, I had a cyst on one ovary earlier this year--they said it was sort of common too.  It took care of itself, because now it's gone.

  3. I would say normal to being 5 days behind. With my 2nd pregnancy, my DR measured my baby being at 28 weeks....so I should have been 32 weeks at my next appointment, but my DR measured the baby being at 31 weeks 1 Day. And everything turned out fine. 5 weeks could be a little too early to see the heartbeat. Normally you can see the heart beat 6 week and up. As long as they saw a Yolk sac and fetal pole I"m sure everything is okay. Sometimes Cysts do go away on its on and it's common during pregnancy. I wouldn't worry so much if I was you.
