Question:

Slowed growth at 5 months old?

My daughter is 5 1/2 months old. At her 4 month appointment she was above the 97% in both height and weight. Since then her weight has kept going up, she's 21 1/2 lbs! (almost exclusively breastfed, the occasional fortified rice cereal), but she has only grown another 3/4 of an inch since 4 months. Is this normal? (As a note, the father and I are both 6' tall and slender)

  1. It's totally normal for her growth to slow down around the middle of the first year.  It may continue to slow down as she becomes more active, and that's not a problem either.

My older son weighed 20 lbs by his 4 month checkup, 26 lbs at a year, and is now a very healthy 4 year old at 42 inches tall and 40 lbs.

  2. You only need to worry about weight loss. My baby was in a very very high percentile by 2 mos. Dad and I are both tall and skinny too. She has "dropped" to a lower percentile gradually.
