  1. How about this to simplfy it how often a hitter makes contact with the ball and puts it into play!

  2. Like other people have said, it's Total Bases / At-bats.

    It gives you more of an idea of what kind of hitter the person is.  Ichiro Suzuki has a .331 batting average, which is comparable to Albert Pujols' .333 batting average.  However, Ichiro's slugging percentage is a paltry .432, compared to Pujols' .620.  This is a product of Pujols' ability to drive the ball, instead of just putting it in play and beating it out.  Obviously, a homerun is much more valuable than a single, and slugging percentage is weighted to reflect this importance.

  3. a very simple explanation: if you get a homerun every time you get a hit, you have a slugging percentage of 4.000, a triple every time 3.000, a doube every time 2.000 and a single every time 1.000, but that is only if you get a hit every time you get up

  4. slugging percentage is basically this:

    if you get a single, you're 1 for 1

    but if you get a double you're 2 for 1

    triple = 3 for 1

    HR = 4 for 1

  5. 1B + (2B x 2) + (3B x 3) + (HR x 4) / AB

    which is:

    TB / AB (total bases divided by at-bats)

    It's a measure of a hitter's power.
