Question:

Sluggish after I eat anything, especially sugary things??

I feel just exhausted sometimes after I eat. Especially if there is sugar in it. (Like today I had a romaine lettuce salad with strawberries, blue berries and pecans with fat free poppy-seed dressing. I had a 7up with it and a slice of baguette bread)

Right now I feel like I cant keep my eyes open.

This happens a lot after meals.

I do have hypo thyroid disease, but levels are checked monthly. I also have had a full battery of blood work done...so no blood sugar issues or diabetes.

Anyone else have this?

  1. Sugary things jack your blood sugar up then your pancreas produces extra insulin to cover which brings them down and you kind of bottom out.  The highs and lows your sugars go through make you feel very tired.

  2. sugar is not good. cooked foods also dont have enzymes in them and this can cause you to get tired. I would suggest looking at weston a price foundation, it tells you how the oldest living cultures that are healthy eat. they are in good health.

Look into raw food. But make sure you eat fats. lots of fats. good fats from grass fed animals. Raw dairy changed my life, I used to be like you, now I am not.

oooo also, breads turn into sugar in the body, so stay away from them too.

  3. last year i was in your position almost everyday. i don't think the sugar had an impact on me but just eating in general made me so sleepy. then one day i was in traffic school and the instructor played a video (i don't know the name). but in it, the commentator said that lack of sleep contributes to feeling sleepy after a meal.

i'm not 100% sure of this but also i was under a lot of stress and once the stress went away, i was able to feel alert after eating. yay!

  4. 7-up

Eating sugary foods or those made from flour, such as bakery products or pastas, causes blood sugar to rise higher than normal. This causes your pancreas to release large amounts of insulin, which drives one of the protein building blocks called tryptophan (see fig 1 ) from your bloodstream into your brain, where it is converted to serotonin that makes people fall asleep naturally at night.

So, why are you sleepy after a big lunch or dinner? It's a combination of the type of food, amount of food, and of course, your sleeping habit.

Everybody responds differently, I have low blood sugar and so I avoid eating at work because all I want to do is sleep after eating too. I will snack on say a couple peanut butter crakers or fruit if I get really hungry

  5. Everyone feels sluggish after they eat. It's been called food coma. Blood rushes to the stomach and digestive system to help process the food which means less blood flow to the brain making you feel drowsy.

Sugar can be explained by 'sugar crash' because sugar gives a very temporary high but then leaves you feeling low energy soon after.
