Small 1-2 person sailboat for shallow water? 14' and under.?

I'm looking into a small sailboat that can be setup solo for bay and surf play. Daggerboards are OK, as long as they can be played with in about 2 feet of water.

Thinking a Hobie Cat 14', they're hard to find, so I'll keep my options open.

Looking to spend around a thousand. What boats can you suggest?

  1. Call a local yacht club and ask them if they know of any boats that fit your needs. Sometimes there are boats sitting in peoples yards that just need some TLC and they will practically give them away.

A Hobie 14 is nice but I have seen Hobie 18's for $1500. Also google small boats for sale and look in your local newspapers. You did not say where you are but I found this one in Texas. See link below.

I did google searches for 'sailboats 14 for sale' and found a lot of ads.

  2. If you just want to get out there on the water, you can build a small sailboat.  You can get free plans and all sorts of ideas off the Internet.  I have a homemade all wood Windmill.  This thing is faster than a Laser.  You could also build something called a PD Racer.  For about $100 and some work, you could be sailing.  A PD is not fast or great looking, but it is less money.
